Fast File Splitter (FFS for short) is a tool to split large files into smaller files so that they can be put on floppies or sent by email. FFS can be used individual home computer users or large organizations.

    When to use it?
If you ever wanted to send a large file using email and your email server has a quota on the attahements file sizes, you can use FFS to splite the file into multiple smaller files and send them separately.
    Other possible uses include:
    - Putting a large files on multiple disks.
    - Backing up files to CDs or Disks.
    - Encryting and compressing sensitive files.
    - Creating a self executable files for fast access.

How can Fast File Splitter be used?

For a typical file splitting, the following steps would be taken:
1- Choose the source file. The source file is the large file to be split.
2- Choose the destination folder. The detination folder is where all file chuncks(^) are to go.
3- Choose the destination base name. This is the base file name of chuncks (without the extension, FFS will choose the suitable extension for you).
4- Choose your splitting style - More on that later.
5- Set the splitting options - More on that later.
6- Click on the Split button.

What splitting styles can I use?
FFS comes preconfigured with some pre-configured splitting styles for easy setting. These can be accessed from the 'Removable media quick select' dropdown list.
    The list includes the following:
    - 1.44 MB Floppy: Suitable for putting chuncks on a soft floppy (3.5").
    - 100 MB ZIP, 250 MB ZIP: Suitable for backing up to zip drives (choose 100 MB, or 250 MB depending on the zip drive you have).
    - 4.7 GB DVD: If you really have a VERY large files (larger than 4.7 GB) and you want to split it for backing it up on DVDs, use this splitting style.
    - 650 MB CD and 700 MB CD: Use these splitting styles when backing up to a CD (choose 650MB or 700MB depending on the CD capacity).
By selecting an option in the 'Removable media quick select' dropdown list, FFS will automatically configure your settings to match the option you selected.
If none of the 'quick media' options suits you, you can always select a custom splitting style. You have the option to split your file either by size of by files count.
Choose 'By Size' option if you have a destination size criteria (such as when you are sending a file by email and you need to set the file size as the quota your email server supports).
Choose 'By Files Number' option if you want a specified number of chuncks at the end.

What splitting options do I have?
FFS comes packed with a lot of useful features. Let us start mentioning them one by one:

    * Self Extracting File (sfx for short)(^):
This is useful when you are sending the split files to a person who does not have FFS installed on his PC. Users receiving these files can join split files without FFS.
You can also use this option yourself for easy access and joining to the split files. Keep in mind that choosing this option will add a small amount (82KB) to only the first chunck.

    * Encryption:
This feature is especially useful when you intened to send your file across the unsecure Internet. When encrypting your file, an encryption password is to be entered. You will also be prompted to enter the password when re-joining the files.
FFS supports two types of encryption algorithms: simple encryption, or blowfish encryption. Each encryption method is to be used depending on your needs.
A simple encryption should be used when you need to do a quick encryption of the file and your file is not that sensitive. Simple encryption is relatively easier to break. When choosing this encryption algorithm, try to select a hard and lengthy password.
The blowfish encryption is a solid and hard to break encryption algorithm. Use this option if you have a sensitive file you want to split. Choosing this option will result in a slower splitting but a more secure result.

    * Compression:
This feature will compress your large file while it is being split. The result of is a list of files that have a size less than the original one. When choosing this option, the generated files will not comply 100% with the chosen splitting style especially when splitting using files number, this is due to the fact that the compression will change the original file size.
Use this option to gain more in terms of the file size keeping in mind that this will slow down the splitting process.
Please refrain from using this option when you are splitting an already compressed file (such as .zip, .rar, .gz files) since this might give you a bigger file instead of a smaller one.

    * Silent join (option available in sfx files):
This option permits a single double-click joining of a sfx file. It will not prompt the user and show any status when joining.

    * Autorun option (option available in sfx files):
Choosing this option allows you to run a custom command after the joining is complete. You might choose for example to automatically open the joined program after the join is complete.
The autorun command can be any executable program such as notepad. To refer to the joined file, use %1. Using for example 'notepad %1' will launch notepad and open the joined file in it.

    * License (option available in sfx files):
Adding a license to your sfx file will allow you to license your file in a way that the user joining the files should agree on the license before continuing.
You have the ability to enter your license text and title.

    * Comment (option available in sfx files):
This option adds a comment to be shown to the user when joining the files. The comment can be any text you enter. It has no effect on the joining and does not pose any constraints, it is for the purpose of viewing only.

    * Icon (option available in sfx files):
Need to customize your sfx file more? This option allows you to put your custom icon for the sfx file. It is only available in Windows 2000, XP and NT.
The icon file should already be present and it should be in the .ICO format.

    * Deleting uneeded files after splitting/joining:
Using this option will allow you to automcatically delete any uneeded files after splitting/joining.
When splitting, FFS can automatically delete the original file after splitting is complete and successful (only if you choose so).
When joining, FFS can automatically delete all file chuncks after joining is complete and successful (only if you choose so).

    * Process Priority(^):
Normally you wouldn't change the default setting of this option, but in some cases you need to.
When you are in a hurry and need to split a file and you do not want to do anything on your PC while the file is being split, you can increase the process priority to the maximum.
On the other hand, if you are not in a hurry and you need to work on your PC while splitting and you do not want the splitter to slow your PC, decrease the process priority.
